Cat Etherington, our Director of Recovery, will be taking the training. Cat  is a therapist, coach and trainer with over 15 years’ experience working with pornography use, compulsive sexual behaviours, and relational betrayal. She is also a board member of APSATS (Association for Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists), and co-delivers APSATS signature Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model clinical training. Cat delivers trauma-informed CPD for counsellors and associated professionals, with a focus on ethical, relational, and partner-sensitive practice.  

By the end of the training participants will:

• Gain a clearer understanding of how pornography use and compulsive sexual behaviours are currently understood within counselling and therapeutic contexts.
• Feel more confident recognising when these issues may be present in client work.
• Develop greater awareness of the impact these behaviours can have on partners, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.
• Understand the ethical considerations involved in working with these concerns and when specialist referral may be helpful.
• Learn how to respond to disclosures of pornography use or sexual behaviour concerns in a way that is trauma-informed, compassionate, and non-shaming.
• Have space to reflect on how personal beliefs and cultural influences can shape therapeutic responses to these issues.

This is a full days training intentionally positioned as a foundational CPD day, not a specialist diploma. Participants will explore:

• Psychological, relational, and neurological dimensions of compulsive sexual behaviours and pornography use.

• The impact of problematic porn use and sexual compulsivity on partners, families, and relationships.

• Assessment considerations, risk awareness, and when/how to refer on for specialist help.

The day blends teaching input, reflective practice, and applied discussion so that learning connects directly with participants’ real‑world client work.

Participants can expect a trauma‑informed, non‑shaming learning environment that invites self‑reflection on personal values, biases, and assumptions, fostering clearer, more compassionate therapeutic responses. 

This one‑day CPD training is designed for:

• Qualified counsellors and psychotherapists

• Counselling trainees in placement or nearing qualification

• Practitioners working across faith-based, charity, community, and general practice settings who are likely to encounter pornography or compulsive sexual behaviours in their work

The day offers a grounded, accessible introduction to working with pornography / sex addiction and compulsive sexual behaviour in clinical practice, helping practitioners respond ethically and confidently when these issues arise in the therapy room. The training equips you to navigate conversations with clients from diverse backgrounds—including those who hold religious or traditional values around sexuality, and those who don't—with compassion and clinical integrity, regardless of whether you share your client's worldview.
